Growth, phenology, and seed viability between glyphosate-resistant and glyphosate-susceptible hary fleabane Bragantia
Kaspary,Tiago Edu; Lamego,Fabiane Pinto; Cutti,Luan; Aguiar,Adalin Cezar de Morais; Rigon,Carlos Alberto Gonsiorkiewicz; Basso,Claudir José.
ABSTRACT Glyphosate is the herbicide most used worldwide. In cropping systems that rely on repeated applications of glyphosate or cultivate genetically modified soyabean crop, there are numerous cases of glyphosate resistant weeds, including Conyza bonariensis. Differences among competitive ability of Conyza spp. have been found. However, little information is available on the fitness costs related to glyphosate resistance in Conyza bonariensis. We evaluated growth, phenology, and seed viability of glyphosate-resistant (GR) and glyphosate-susceptible (GS) Conyza bonariensis from Brazil, in 2012 (fall/winter) and 2013 (spring/summer). When grown alone, in pots, C. bonariensis GR biotype developed more rapidly than the GS biotype, as evidenced by their...

Pre-dispersal seed predation and abortion in species of Callisthene and Qualea (Vochysiaceae) in a Neotropical savanna Acta Botanica
Custódio,Luciana Nascimento; Carmo-Oliveira,Renata; Mendes-Rodrigues,Clesnan; Oliveira,Paulo Eugênio.
The ability of plants to generate fertile offspring is influenced by morpho-physiological and ecological factors. Hence, reproductive success is directly linked to factors affecting quantity and quality of their progeny. In the Cerrado (savanna) of Brazil, the Vochysiaceae is a widely distributed and ecologically important family. Factors affecting pre-dispersal seed predation and abortion were studied for populations of Callisthene fasciculata, C. major, Qualea multiflora and Q. parviflora. To characterize differences between genera, as well as among species, study areas, and individuals, we quantified pre-dispersal seed predation and abortion. Differences of seed abortion among the species were related to intrinsic reproductive features and not to area...

Self-pollination and its implication in invasiveness of Helianthus annuus ssp. annuus AND H. Petiolaris JBAG
Gutierrez,A; Rueda,F; Cantamutto,M; Poverene,M.
Helianthus petiolaris and H. annuus are exotic invaders that have spread widely in central Argentina in the last 70 years. As other annuals of the same genus, these species are outcrossers bearing a sporophytic self-incompatible mechanism. We investigated the ability to self-pollinate in plants of five accessions of each species, its influence on some reproductive traits, and compared to the cultivated sunflower, in which breeding for self-compatibility has been very successful. Plants were allowed to self-pollinate in bagged heads, manually forced to self-pollinate or allowed to cross-pollinate. Although both invasive species were confirmed as self-incompatible, some plants within most accessions were able to self-pollinate. There was no significant...

การพัฒนาสายพันธุ์เรณูเป็นหมันโดยวิธีการผสมกลับ Thai Agricultural
Bang-on Thammasamisorn.
Development of new CMS lines by backcrossing was conducted at Suphan Buri Rice Research Center during 2005-2011. The objective was to develop Thai elite breeding lines to be better varieties of CMS lines adapted to the environment in Thailand. The new CMS lines will be used for research project on hybrid rice production. CMS lines from IRRI were used as donor in repeated backcrossing of 6-7 generations to the recurrent parent, Thai elite breeding line. After seven generations of repeated backcrossing two new CMS lines, SPR06186A (IR58025A/7*SPR98015-59-1-2-2-2) and SPR06189A (IR73328A/7*SPR98015-59-1-2-2-2), were developed. These two lines have one hundred percent of pollen sterility and similar agronomic traits to the recurrent parent. SPR06186A has a...
